With this first blog I would like to introduce myself in some more detail and inform you about how I became to be a Sex Therapist and share with you my passion for the job.
During my Masters in Psychology in the Netherlands I discovered a passion for sexology and sexual health by being enthused by a professor who talked very passionately about his work in the sexual health field and the positive outcomes his clients reported. From this moment on I knew I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives by helping them improve their sexual health and happiness.

From this moment on I knew I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives by helping them improve their sexual health and happiness.
After I finished my Masters in Psychology I continued with a Masters in Sexology which I loved doing. This programme provided me both the necessary information to help people with sound advice, and skills to communicate about this sensitive topic in a comfortable way.
After finishing both Masters I started as a clinical psychologist and sex therapist in an Academic Hospital. This position provided the opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary team and to build my knowledge and experience, supported by established professionals in the sexual health area. After 2 years I accepted a position in a local hospital, where I set up a sexology department providing sexual health care in a multi-disciplinary team of psychologists, gynaecologists and urologists. After 4 years working in this hospital my partner and I moved to Australia. I joined a private practice in North Adelaide, where I successfully established sex therapy as an additional service to this practice.
I love to help people improve their psychological and sexual health. Noticing an increased confidence and happiness in their relationship makes my work very rewarding. I believe happiness in your sexual relationship keeps your relationship healthy and strong and provides you -as a person- strength and confidence. Moreover, trust and feelings of connection with your partner protect against feelings of depression or anxiety.
Sex is not an easy topic to discuss, whether in your own relationship or in a professional environment, because of feelings of shame, guilt or discomfort experienced by the clients as well as by the professional. Due to my training as a sex therapist I am able to discuss the topic with a nonjudgmental attitude of openness and understanding. With my knowledge I can provide ideas and strategies to open up the path of communication about sexual problems (like erection problems, premature ejaculation, pain during intercourse, or desire problems), undesired behaviours (like porn or sex addiction), gender discomfort or confusion about sexual identity and offer solutions for these concerns.
I noticed coming from the quite liberal Netherlands that discussing any of these sexual topics is even more complex and taboo in South Australia. I know there are many people suffering from sexual issues which they have not shared with anyone else before. I would like to offer them the opportunity to talk to a professional who is understanding and nonjudgmental, and who can offer them a possible solution for their difficulties.
With Sex Therapy & Psychology Adelaide I would like to continue to provide sex therapy services to the people from the Adelaide region. I would also like to provide education to professionals in other areas of health care to help them better understand sexual problems and provide tools to start conversations about sexuality with their clients or patients.
My long-term aim is to develop a multi-disciplinary team with an urologist, gynaecologist, pelvic floor physiotherapist and medical practitioner to provide specialised and all-round care for people with sexual difficulties.
If you are suffering from sexual problems or have questions about your sexual performance and you would like to talk to a professional, feel free to contact me. If you are interested to learn more about sexual problems, stay informed by reading the future blogs I will post on this page.
